Viet Nam is located on the Indochinese peninsula in Southeast Asia, with a total land area of
331,223.1 sq km. It is bordered by China to the North, Laos and Cambodia to the West, and the
East Sea to the East, and boasts 3,260 km of coastline and tens of thousands of islands,
including the Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagos.

The country consists of three main regions - the Northern, Central and Southern regions -
with distinct linguistic typology and climate.

Viet Nam is a tropical and monsoonal country, with an average humidity of 84% throughout
the year, annual rainfall from 1,200 to 3,000 mm, and annual temperatures between 5 C and
37 C. Due to the variety of topography - plains, lowlands, highlands, and mountains - the
climate varies considerably. The North enjoys four distinctive seasons, while there are only
two seasons - dry and wet - in the South.
