Dear readers,
To quote the OECD, “Green growth presents a new approach to economic growth that puts human
well-being at the center of development, while ensuring that natural assets continue to provide the
resources and environmental services to support sustainable development.”
Green growth has now become a global trend.
In Vietnam, the National Green Growth Strategy for the 2021-2030 period and vision to 2050 was
adopted on October 1, 2021. The overall target is “to accomplish green growth, thereby contributing to
the restructuring of the economy in conjunction with renewing the growth model, in order to achieve
economic prosperity, environmental sustainability, and social equality; strive towards a green and
carbon neutral economy; and contribute to the realization of the goal to reduce global warming.”
Last November, speaking at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26)
in Glasgow, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh made a commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050.
Vietnam has, in fact, taken practical steps to reduce its emissions. The national power development
plan for the 2021-2030 period and vision to 2045 (Power Development Plan VIII) submitted by the
Ministry of Industry and Trade to the government for approval last October stuck to the path of
renewable energy development. Earlier, Prime Ministerial Decision No. 11/2017/QD-TTg in 2017
and Decision No. 39/2018/QD-TTg in 2018 also approved mechanisms to promote the development
of solar and wind power projects.
At the “Vietnam Connect Forum 2022”, held jointly by Vietnam Economic Times and the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs in Ho Chi Minh City on April 8 and with the theme “Resource Convergence for
Promoting Green Growth and Sustainable Development”, domestic and foreign experts offered
many recommendations regarding solutions for green growth and encouraged enterprises to apply
such solutions for sustainable development.
Our Cover Story in this May edition therefore looks again at the actual situation and the policies and
solutions for green growth and sustainable development Vietnam has pursued as it seeks to become
a developing, upper-middle-income country with modern industry by 2030.
